Racially Stereotyped Characters

http://flavorwire.com/265006/the-most-racially-stereotyped-characters-on-tv-right-now/
This article talks about all the different stereotypes TV shows portray. A lot of the time people watch the show and find minority characters funny and don't realize its because the writers are making fun of their race. Most TV shows clearly stereotype certain characters. For example in the show Rob, they show his wife's grandma's house with pictures of Jesus all over it. They are stereotyping that all Latin Americans are really religious and have things with pictures of Jesus all over. As you look through the list of characters that are racially stereotyped you will probably find a show that you watch and never really realized how racist it is.

  1. I've definitely noticed the pattern of racially stereotypical characters in television. I have to say that, without a doubt, Glee and Family guy are the worst. In Glee, along with the characters mentioned in the article, Rachel gets critiqued pretty heavily for being Jewish. There are a lot of comments about her "Jewish sized nose". There are a lot of these stereotypes in television. Although I love watching The Mindy Project, it's probably one of the worst. Tamrya, an African American is perceived as a lazy, careless, uninterested nurse who talks in a less than professional manner in the doctors office. Mindy, the main character, is Indian-American and plays a doctor. It's difficult when you really like a show but the characters are so stereotypical. A lot of TV shows ted to generalize minority groups and it's actually more uncommon to find shoes without stereotypical characters than to find ones with complex characters who belong to a minority group.

  2. The amount of stereotyping in TV is a bit excessive, I agree, but that is what our culture deems as good television these days. The writers now have to take the stereotypes and exaggerate them even more because without the comical value that these negative stereotypes add to a show, there would not be as many viewers. I understand racial stereotypes are a serious matter but their job is to make good television and the U.S. view on what is funny or not affects how shows are made. So in order to change television, we have to change our culture.
